Abstract
Optical Character Recognition refers to the branch of computer science that involves reading text from paper and translating the images into a form that the computer can manipulate. This paper demonstrates the usefulness of Genetic Programming with Automatically Defined Functions for evolving Optical Character Recognition algorithms. The problem-specific information required for this technique is a set of training isolated Arabic characters in different fonts. The result is a set of algorithms that can determine which character is represented by an image.
